Strawberry is a type of aggregate fruit, which means a fruit formed from a number of separate carpels of one gynoecium, and is derived from the same flower, each carpel produces a “fruitlet”.
Many people think that the whole strawberry is developed from an ovary, but actually the fleshy part is derived from the receptacle of the flower, so it is also called an accessory fruit. The seed like structures that are embedded in the fleshy pulp are achenes. It makes me wonder, what evolutionary forces caused the strawberry seeds developed on the outside?
The strawberries showing in this picture are immature, they are in green, hard, and have a sour taste. They will turn red when become mature, the red colour is a signal to the animals that it is sweet and tasty, this attract animals to eat them and help them to disperse the seeds after digestion.
