Poaceae are monocots that included many agriculture plants like the rice, wheat and maize. They have alternate leaves, usually are long, narrow and flat. Most Poaceae have open leaf sheaths, with ligules and often with auricles, they prevent the entry of water into the lead sheath. They have cylindrical stem that are mostly hollow and jointed with nods. There are several inflorescence types including spike, racemes and panicle, each spikelet is a floral unit that are protected by two glumes, the spikelet contains several florets that are covered by lemma and palea.
Poaceae are pollinated by wind, they have exposed stamens and feathery stigmas so they can capture pollen from the wind. As they don’t need to attract animal pollinators, most of them lack petals, no bright colour, odour or nectar. Rather than using energy to produce large petals and nectar, they spend their energy to produce large amount of pollen to increase the chance of pollination.
