The green fungus on the orange is a saprophytic true fungus with a chitin cell wall called Penicillium expansum under Ascomycota. In this genus, the name Penicillium refers to the branching arrangement of the asexual reproduction structures. "Penicillus" is derived from the Greek word for "brush". It shows a polar growth mode by the cell elongation and hyphal branching of its haploid hyphae which is shown in the top left corner of the picture above. Asexual reproduction occurs through the production of spherical conidia or spores during the reproductive stages of P. digitatum's life cycle.
