Description

Ruta graveolens, commonly known as Rue 臭草, is a kind of dicots come from the family Rutaceae.

Leaves are bipinnate compound, with alternate arrangement; the flower is actinomorphic, or radial symmetry.

Leaves of rue are glandular dotted, in which translucent oil dots are interspersed on leaves, a characteristic of the family.

The flower is bisexual, with number of stamens (8) twice as petals (2). Ovary is exposed on top of other floral parts, which is a superior ovary.

Petals are already shedded, while some stamens remains. It is a dehiscent dry fruit , which the pericarp will get dry and splits when mature to release seeds.

4 chambers of developing seeds are observed, and seeds are attached on the central column. In other words, the ovary is originally 4 loculled, with axile placentation.


Additional information:
Being a common ingredient of sweet mung bean soup, rue also have medical use, including clear heat and remove toxin. However, itself can also be toxic. Poisoning is resulted if over 300g is consumed within 3 days, with symptoms like skin contact dermatitis and multi-organ failure. Therefore, pregnant women are not recommended to consume any food with rue added.
