Description

Oryza sativa is a monocot member of Poaceae and its seeds 'rice grain' are staple food all around the world. The seeds are grown on spikelets arranged in terminal panicle influoresence. The rice seed in the picture has layers of the protective hull, the fibrous bran, the nutritious endosperm, and the embryo (germ). There is also the lemma and palea, the the hairy brachts which suspend and protect the seed when developing on the parent plant. Rice grain is a dry, indehiscent, 1 seed caryopsis type fruit grown on spikelet florets.

In white rice, the rice is processed to remove the bran and endosperm for higher carb-content and longer shelf life. In brown rice, the nutritrious bran and endosperm is retained, thus contain more nutrients eg. fibre, protein, minerals, so brown rice is healthier and lower-calories/carbs than white rice.
