Description

Laminaria belongs to group phaeophyte. A high degree of differentiation of sporophyte into epidermis, cortex and medulla can be observed. Meanwhile, it exhibits a diplohaplontic life cycle which consists of macroscopic sporophytes and microscopic gametophytes. The gametophytes look very different from the sporophytes, hence they are heteromorph.

Paraphyses (2n), which are the tall, thread-like structures located on the epidermis, are responsible for providing support and protection to the zoosporangia. They are diploid in number. On the other hand, zoosporangia (2n), which are the spore-producing organs are found between the paraphyses. They are also diploid in number. However, inside the zoosporangia, they produce a type of spore, known as zoospore (n) , which is haploid in number. When they are released from the zoosporangia, they would develop into male / female gametophytes and undergo oogamous sexual reproduction and form a zygote.
