Description

Belongs to Malvaceae
Is grown in tropics and subtropics region.

Epicalyx: the whorl of bracts outside the true calyx, at the base of flowers
Monadelphous: all the filaments of the stamens are united into a single bundle to form a tube-like structure but anthers remain free

Uses of the flower:
1. edible (are used in salads in Pacific Island)
2. accessory (hairpiece)
3. shine shoes in India (also called ‘shoeblack plant’)
4. pH indicator (turns acidic solution to dark pink; turns basic solution to green)
5. Chinese medicine
