Shelf fungi are a group of fungi in Basidomycota. They are also named as Bracket fungi. The shelf-shaped substances were the fruiting body. They can be found on the trunk of both living and dead trees. Some of the shelf fungi are edible. In these photos, the fungi were found on a living tree in the secondary forest in Tai Po Kau special area at Nov of 2012. The habitat there was wet and dark at the time of my visit.

Very nice pictures and clear descriptions! Well-done!
Shelf fungi produce spores above the ground. They drop their spores vertically but at an angle to the parent fungi, continuing their infections on the same tree!
Sze Hang: Great. What is your source of reference?
