Mycobiont and photobiont can provide nutrients to each other. Yet, they can hardly survive without a substratum. Will lichens growing on tree affects their health and branching (for example, blocking the way of branching of tree)?

They only grow on the bark, which consist of mostly dead cells (cork cells).

Lichen are a mutualistic composite organism with a fungal partner and photobiont partner of cyanobacteria and/or algae. The photo is showing a crustose lichen growing on tree, in a crust-like texture. Lichens need unpolluted environment/air condition to grow best, and can use as atmosphere pollution indicator. Lichen are able to survive extreme temperature and dryness by entering a dormant state. Lichen can grow on tree bark or soil. Lichen is used by birds to camouflage their nest, and used in human perfume production. However, is lichen truly a symbiotic relationship? There is evidence showing the algal partner may be able to grow more effectively alone rather than in lichen. Is the fungal partner in fact a parasite of the photobiont?
