Description

type of simple dry, indehisent fruit, develop from one single carpel, with only one seed. It resembles the archene fruit but the pericarp is fused with the sead coat. Typically they are grain of Fmailiy Poaceae, including wheat, rice , grass and corn.

The type of rice in the picture is ‘Brown rice’, a whole grain rice, it is with its outer hull removed (For ‘White rice’, the bran and germ are also removed). Compared to White rice, it is with higher content of fibre and magnesium.

Achene is developed from 1-loculed ovary, not necessary a single carpelled ovary. In fact, most of Poaceae sp. have 2 to 3-carpelled ovary.
