Description

Upper photo is a gemma cup taken from a live sample of Marchantia sp. while lower photo is the vertical section of a gemma cup.
Marchantia belongs to the phylum Marchantiophyta/ Hepatophyta. It is a kind of complex thalloid liverwort. It propagates asexually through gemmae which give rise to new haploid gametophyte(n). The gemma cup containing the gemmae is located on the upper surface of the thallus. Gemmae are dispersed by splashing of raindrops.
