Description
Stipules refers to one or a pair of leaflike structures, spines, glands, or scales at the leaf base or along a petiole. Stipules are believed to protect the developing leaf in the embryonic state. They may occasionally be modified to enclose a bud. (The penguin dictionary of Plant Sciences) When we say the plant is "exstipulate", it means that the plant has no stipules. While "stipulate" means that the plant has stipule(s). The photo on the left shows a species of Rubiaceae, which is stipulate. The photo on the right shows a species of Myrtaceae, which is exstipulate.
