Description

Antheridium and oogonium of Chara sp. in 100X. Chara is a freshwater streptophyte with leaf-like structure and a simple rooting system. Nodes and internodes are shown in the picture. In sexual form, antheridium and oogonium are surrounded with accessory 'sterile jacket'. Antheridium is a round shaped cell while oogonium is a oval shaped cell with a crown-shape structure called crown cell atop of it. Chara may be thought to be the 'missing link' between algae to land plant because of their similarity of cell system.
