Do you know the plodity of these cells?

the zygospore is diploid cell due to the conjugation of two cells

The vegetative cells of Spirogyra are haploidic while the zygospores are diploid. The photo shows the sexual reproduction of Siprogyra that a conjugation tube is shown. After fertilization, the zygotes will be surrounded by sporopollenin-containing walls. Sporopollenin is very resistant that it enables the zygotes to survive in harsh environment. Asexual reproduction is observed in this kind of organisms as well. It is achieved by fragmentation and cell division.

Importance of sexual reproduction in Spirogyra sp.
Stresses from the environment, including pH change, temperature change, or desiccation can induce Spirogyra to undergo conjugation by forming conjugation tubes between male and female gametes. This process allows for the exchange of genetic information within a population, contributing to the individual species fitness and adaptability to change. The structure and formation of this conjugation tube can also be utilized in identification between the more that 400 various species within this genus (Wongsawad and Peerapornpisal 2014).
