Mature hydrodictyon cells have numerous nuclei and a large chloroplast with numerous pyrenoids.

Question: What is the mechanism behind the cells of hydrodictyon to join together to form polygonal configuration? Why do they achieve such configuration, which is not observed in other algae?

The cylindrical cells in the polygonal configuration as the graph shown are multinucleated, and the configuration gives this green alga a net-like structure. It can undergo both sexual and asexual reproduction. Similar gametes (isogamy) of Hydrodictyon can fuse to reproduce sexually, while they reproduce asexually by many motile zoospores (1n) of each cell which later arrange in small netlike structures. The cylindrical cells in asexual reproduction are haploid.
