The tooth-like gaps on the mouth are where the spores will be released. Its spore dispersal strategy is to release spores bit by bit rather than all by once. If the spores released all by once but the environment is not good, then all spores will die.

The spores of the moss are released when the capsule dries up. The mature capsule dries up, leading to the fall off of operculum. Then, the capsule together with the exposed peristome where teeth can be observed will release spores in a regulated manner. At each time of release, which is triggered by winds, only part of the spores will be dispersed through the small openings of peristome (the whole structure is like a pepper shaker). Being regulated, the dispersal of spores will not be entirely failed if the weather is unfavourable.
