There are perforations in the dead cells, which can be observed as the circles in the photo. They are pores that allow the water entrance. With pores, cells can retain water very well and release water slowly.

Question: How does pore prevent the fast release of water? Can they change their shapes to adjust to different environments, like plenty of moisture in the air or a lack of it?
