Description

Spirogyra is a genus of filamentous green algae with both sexual and asexual reproductions present.
During sexual reproductive stage, the male filament grows conjugation tubes towards the female filament (LEFT);
After the formation of conjugation tubes, the content in male parent cells condenses and migrates to female cells through the tubes (CENTRE);
This leads to the formation of zygosopres inside female parent cells (RIGHT).
The zygotes are able to withstand extreme environment for a long time and ready for zygotic meiosis when the condition is favourable.
