The haploid hyphae of the different mating types are able to grow towards each other by the collaborative synthesis of trisporic acid. The plus strain produces 4-dehydrotrisporic acid and the minus strain produces trisporol. The two chemicals then reacts to produce trisporic acid. A high level of trisporic acid will lead to the formation of zygophores in the two hyphae and grow towards each other. Can the mating type of the hyphae be identified based on its morphology?
