Lobaria, also known as "lungwort", is an unusual lichen to have three parts symbiosis. The formation of ascus in the specimen evidences the presence of ascomycete as the mycobiont, which is responsible for preventing desiccation of photobiont, providing mineral nutrients from the substrate, and screening excessive light. For photobionts, Nostoc is responsible for fixing nitrogen while algae provide photosynthetic products to mycobiont.
