Description

Callistemon viminalis, aka 'tall bottle brush' is a flowering tree native to Australia. It is evergreen and bears red spiky monoecious flowers in spike influoresence borne on terminal brachlets. It is called bottle brush because its spiky red stamens resemble a bottle-brush. 

The flowers are actinomorphic with radial symmetry, with numerous stamens basally fused. The ovary is semi-inferior, with the other floral parts embeded partially above the ovary. Each flower produces a woody fruit after fertilisation containing hundreds of seeds. After fertilisation, the fruits can retain on the tree for years before splitting and releasing seeds. In some species, the fruits only release their seeds in response to heat/smoke to exploit the nutrient-rich ashy soil after bushfires.

Callistemon sp. is adapted for hummingbird and bee pollinators, secreting high-sucrose concentration nectar to attract animal pollinators.
