Description

Coprinus is a type of basidiomycetes. In the photo displayed above, we can observe the haploid basidiospores (n). The basidiospores can germinate to form haploid mycelia. When mycelia of opposite mating types come into contact, they can undergo plasmogamy to form dikaryotic mycelia (n+n), followed by karyogamy to produce diploid mycelia (2n). Ultimately, basidiospores can be produced by undergoing meiosis.

Besides, 2 layers can also be identified from the photo above. Just below the basidiospores, a large layer can be observed and it is called peridium. The peridium serves as a protective layer which encloses masses of spores. Meanwhile, hymenium, which is the fertile layer bearing the spores can also be identified.
