Description
Left: Laminaria sp. (brown algae); Right: Ulva sp. (green algae). To distinguish between them, macroscopic and microscopic observation can be applied. Under direct observation, brown algae are of brown colour due to the pigment fucosanthin of chlorophyll a and c, while green algae are of green colour due to chlorophylls a and b. Under microscopic observation, the thallus of brown algae consists of three layers, which are the epidermis, cortex and medulla. On the other hand, the thallus of green algae consists of two layers only.
