The definition of 'berry' in dictionary is 'a pulpy and and usually edible fruit of small size irrespective of its structure'. Under this definition, the fruits in the photo (strawberry, raspberry and blackberry) are all berries.

However, the definition of berry in botany refers to a simple fruit with fleshy juicy mesocarp and endocarp. And a berry usually contains many seeds inside. Examples of berries include banana, grape and tomato.

While for the 'berries' in the photo, they are aggregate fruits, which are formed of a number of separate carpels of one gynoecium of a single flower. There are multiple fruitlets in one aggregate fruit. Other examples of aggregate fruit are lotus and custard apple (Annona reticulata).

How can aggregate fruits benefit seed dispersal? Is it for stronger attraction? Like fusing the fruitlets together so it would be bigger in size and be more appealing to the animals than separate small fruits?
