In the photo, petiolate leaves with sheaths at the base are shown. Also, the spadix inflorescence enclosed by spathe can be observed. These are the unique feature of Araceae. In some species, the spadix inflorescence can produce heat and strong odour to mimic animal dung or dead bodies to attract carrion insects for pollination. Yet, there are still some species which do not mimic carrion like the Calla lily and Anthurium species shown in the picture.
It is heard that the spathe of Araceae can trap the pollinators inside the inflorescence to lengthen the time for pollination. What is the mechanism behind?

Araceae plants are herbs and they are erect, as shown in the photo, while there are some examples that they are climb or float. The leaves are alternate and flat, in addition to being petiolate and with sheaths as mentioned.

Also, it can be seen that there is no perianth. There is no flower on the upper part, and male flowers on middle part, and female flowers on lower part for unisexual ones. Usually there will be neuter ones in between the staminate and carpellate.
